racing a hurricane

cemetary 2

Hey all, a couple of days away and a drive down to North Carolina where Virginia had business to attend to. We left Thursday and drove south in good weather along scenic route 29, finally arriving in Winston-Salem a little after 8 pm. We ordered dinner in and prepared for the next day, watching coverage of the approaching hurricane. Virginia would be working, and I had come along to look around and check out galleries here in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The trip turned out to be a rich experience with some funny tales to tell and lots of pictures taken. By 5 pm Friday we were racing north ahead of hurricane Hanna, but in her rain bands. We stopped to see very good friends outside of Lynchburg, VA and then drove on in heavy rains to arrive back in DC very late. I finally made it to bed at about 2 am Saturday morning and was glad to be home safe and sound. A drive I would not want to repeat.

Little by little I will share the stories and pictures here, as it was a very good trip. It was the richest use of 7 hours out of a day that I have enjoyed in a while, and most of my stories will relate to those 7 hours.

Teaser: how to not get ripped off by a car rental company, an Exotic Car Wash, 6 bubbas in a quad cab that liked our ride, exploring an old cemetary, an archaeological dig, a historic Old Salem cottage garden, and my picks for Winston-Salem Galleries to visit.
