the joy of new files every January

Goddess

So much has been going on, in life, the studio, behind the scenes on the business end of things.... it is hard to believe that it is only the 10th of January! One of my favorite new year rituals is the making of new files, both for my computer and my file cabinet, for new images - new art documents - new receipts and sales files - everything organized by year.

On my computer I keep Flickr folders organized by year, so that I can easily find images by when I created them.... including reference images taken but not yet used. When I got this new Dell computer I had a lot of conversations with the people at Dell to put together a computer able to handle my very image heavy work, and they did a great job for me.

Some time ago.... maybe a year or so ago now.... I had a computer crash related to downloading printers' files for a new notecard I was designing at the time. The whole system went down (egads!!!!) and I was not sure whether my computer could be saved. Virginia found an amazing computer guru - who now does work for all my friends - and he took the harddrive away with a promise to be in touch. I told him I had a LOT of images to recover and he sort of fluffed me off. This still cracks me up....... three days later he called me and said "you had a LOT of images on this computer!!!!!!!!!" and it took him days to back them all up. The life of a visual artist. The computer came back to me good as new at a price that I could afford and life goes on.

So the new year starts and a new series is in process in the studio, I am teaching a lot of workshops outside of the art center, and good things are happening business-wise. I will take all of these as good signs for the start of this fresh new year, as well as successfully extricating myself from any drama-filled situations or relationships that drain energy from the good work that I am doing. All in all it is a great start to the new year with lots of positive energy and hope for good things, with a group of amazing and talented people around me who provide inspiration and support.

I thought I was clever and I backed up all my files of my old computer. What I didn't count on was that I would have a different windows program on the new one. I can't open most of the files and would have to purchase expensive software to be able to retrieve those documents. One of them was my Christmas card list and I was kind of lost this year.
