would that be spinning straw into gold???????
This story began many moons ago when Virginia was in graduate school and bought a ten dollar vinyl ottoman at BIG 'K' little 'mart'. It has lived in the corner of the kitchen since I moved here, a place to step up on to reach high cupboards. Years ago a little split began in the vinyl on top and one day we found a little piece of shredded money on the kitchen floor. We patched the ottoman and wondered if perhaps the money came from inside there.... having never found shredded money previously on our kitchen floor..... but the ottoman was still in use and life went on.
In the last week we found a need for the space where the little vinyl ottoman had lived, and it was time for the moment of truth...... to split that thing open and see what was inside. This artist has mixed media needs, and some shredded money would come in handy right about now! We put the ottoman inside a large black lawn and leaf garbage bag, and I took a box cutter and gently split the old vinyl on the top of the ottoman. I gingerly reached in.... and pulled a handful of shredded money out...... and giggled (somewhat maniacally.)
We cut the top off the ottoman and separated a small amount of cotton batting that had padded the top, and removed the top layer of shredded money into a 13 gallon trash bag. Underneath this initial top layer was a layer of straw, neatly placed, and underneath this layer of straw, and all long the sides and bottom of the ottoman was more shredded money. We carefully separated straw from money and were now placing handfuls of clean shredded money into the bag. I started a mental inventory of all the art that would benefit from this new studio supply, and giggled non-stop for the first hour and a half of this separation process.
Eventually we needed a second 13 gallon trash bag, and as we sorted we picked out the big pieces of shredded money to set aside for special uses. All-told we filled two 13 gallon trash bags with shredded money.... so much that some of it will go into storage to be used little by little. Virginia looked online and a 5 pound bag of shredded money from the US treasury costs $45....... a bag about 2 feet long and about 1 foot wide... and they say approximately $10,000 wortth of shredded US currency notes would be inside. Who knows how much shredded money I have, but it will be an amazing addition to my art.

That's what I love about your art...you take conventional items and turn them into something unique..The new studio seems to have brought out your creative side even more. I really miss the old days where we all interacted with one another in Jland. Blogger is okay but so different....I am still writing poetry and sometimes blogging... guess I will never lose that urge to write..lol. Drop by if you have time....
Wow, I'd love to know the story behind all that shredded money. Just imagine if it had been whole. 13 gallon bags. Unbelievable.
